Upstate Medical University Simulated Environments*

Clinical Research Unit

The Clinical Research Unit is dedicated to improving the human condition through a variety of research methods including Phase I-IV clinical trials, device studies, and investigator-initiated studies. The interdisciplinary research teams provide patient care to promote patient, investigator, and sponsor satisfaction.  The CRU can be contracted for PI, Nurse Manager, CRA services.  Additionally, the CRU serves as a simulated environment.  The Unit is staffed by 4 Registered Nurses who are dedicated exclusively to conducting research, and an experienced Certified Lab Technician. There are 10 private available rooms and the unit is open 7AM to 4:30PM Monday through Friday. Per specific protocols, the unit may extend hours during the week and on weekends as needed to ensure successful research.

 Standardized Patient Clinical Skills Center

Located in the Setnor Academic Building, The Clinical Skills Center includes 22 exam rooms, closed-circuit monitoring, and state-of-the-art medical equipment. Standardized patients may be contracted where actors role-play as patients.

Emergency Medicine Simulation Technology and Training (EM-STAT) Center
Upstate's EM-STAT Center is the only one of its kind in Central New York, with state-of-the art equipment and top-notch training. The simulation technology includes:

  • An "extended family" of programmable mannequins four adults, one pediatric and one infant. The mannequins can be programmed to speak, cry, blink, bleed, and respond physiologically to medical intervention.
  • Multi-media equipment, including online simulation programs of scenarios in a 'virtual' environment for student learning
  • Four simulation rooms, including an operating room
  • Two debriefing/conference rooms, where recorded scenarios can be played back and analyzed to review performance.

High-Fidelity Perfusion Simulation – Cardiovascular Perfusion

The new high-fidelity simulation center includes the Orpheus Patient simulator and a variety of modern perfusion equipment in a fully instrumented operating room. The dedicated simulation space includes an operating room, pump room control room and multiple debriefing rooms. Participant’s activities and patient data are digitally captured with audio-visual recording, annotating and playback capabilities.

Center for Research and Evaluation (CRE)
